Migme revives Sold.sg with acquisition

Since listing on the ASX in August last year, Migme has been hard at work building up its social entertainment platform to be bigger and better. Since then, it acquired LoveByte – a chat app for couples – and invested in games platform developer MatchMe. Today, Migme has announced yet another acquisition, this time of penny auction startup Sold.sg for a mixture of cash and shares – a curious move given that the business had shut down in late 2013.

The reason, according to Migme CEO Steven Goh, is that Sold.sg would add an ecommerce component to Migme’s virtual gifts and games platform – the latter had surpassed 9 million MAUs just last month – which is in line with its vision to create a “playful social ecommerce experience” for its users. Chinese C2C marketplace Taobao was the team’s inspiration for this – Goh says they hope to replicate its success:

The hallmark of Taobao, in our view, was the amazing community that emerged on top of it. We’ll be attaching and embedding Sold.sg in Migme with a view of integrating it into our chatrooms, working with our games […] We’ll roll this out as a consumer experience by middle of the year.

Sold.sg’s founding team will not be joining Migme. They have, however, been consulting on aspects of the business and working with the latter’s team to bring the business back to life. Goh is confident that, under Migme’s charge, Sold.sg will not suffer a similar slump that led to its closure previously.

“I think the difference [now] with Migme is that we have a strong marketing and business development presence in a range of markets, and will be able to take Sold.sg to critical mass and beyond,” says Goh.

Sold.sg will be re-launched in February, and will be progressively integrated with the migme platform in 2015.

Marriott hotels testing streaming services directly to their in-room TVs

Marriott hotels testing streaming services directly to their in-room TVs

Marriott is not getting much love from internet power users, thanks to their recent ban on customers using hotspots. It made no sense, really, but today they may be getting some brownie points from those who are fans of streaming services.
Marriott has started testing a new service in 8 of its hotels. In these hotels, users can stream Netflix, Hulu and Pandora straight from their hotel room entertainment systems. It seems to be working well, but it’s still unsure whether this service will be free or come as a premium internet package available to guests.
Opinion: It’s still sad to think they may be charging extra for streaming, but think about it this way – at least you won’t have to rent their expensive movies!

Xiaomi buys almost 3% of Kingsoft

Xiaomi buys almost 3% of Kingsoft

Xiaomi is said to be entering the gaming scene very soon, a rumor that may have been backed up by the company’s latest announcement. In an effort to venture into stronger software projects, Xiaomi has invested in a company named Kingsoft, well known for developing PC games.
Xiaomi purchased 2.98% of said company for HK $527, which is equivalent to about $68 million USD. Kingsoft also has a strong background in security, entertainment and enterprise, which could also help Xiaomi expand its focus into more than gaming.
Opinion: Let’s look at the bigger picture here. Yes, gaming may be awesome, but this is opening doors to new opportunities. Software is important, and it’s the reason why our devices are so powerful. Entering the software game is an obvious evolution for a company like Xiaomi, which plans for huge expansion.

Samsung to release a Galaxy S6 Edge?

News: Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge in the works, Xiaomi buys 3% of Kingsoft, Marriott becoming streaming-friendly

Samsung to release a Galaxy S6 Edge?

New rumors signal a follow-up to Samsung’s innovative Edge display. The feature that was introduced with the Galaxy Note Edge seems to be in its infancy, and it’s a feature without much use so far, but the Korean manufacturer could be well-invested in it.
SamMobile’s sources claim a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is in the works. Samsung is not giving up with a single side, either, it seems they could be adding two Edge displays to their next flagship. One on each side. This would come as a separate version from the original Galaxy S6, a business model we also saw with the Galaxy Note variants.
Opinion: While the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge was a geek’s dream, the concept no longer impresses us. It clearly needs more support, which is also something that is expected to come as the new feature evolves. We should see some new details at MWC, so let’s keep our eyes open.

Deutsche Telekom CEO hopes for a T-Mobile merger in the future

Over the past few years, T-Mobile has been gaining some headway in the United States with the company’s Un-carrier initiative. Unfortunately, that might not get them to where they want to be, according to some higher-ups in the carrier world. In an interview with Re/code, Tim Hoettges, Deutsche Telekom CEO, explains that in order to compete with the likes of Verizon and AT&T, T-Mobile still needs “greater scale” in the US.

Sprint has been in talks with Deutsche Telekom about buying T-Mobile for the past few years. Thanks to US regulatory authorities, the deal ended up falling through because it would decrease the number of major US carriers from four to three. While this may have seemed like a positive situation at the time, Hoettges explains his thoughts on the matter:

I was intrigued by the idea of having a combination with Sprint and being the ‘super-maverick’ in the market. I hope that the political environment will change at one point in time.

While growing in marketshare and surpassing Sprint is an important feat to accomplish for the company, Hoettges says that the biggest hurdle is Verizon and AT&T’s concentration of wealth and spectrum that T-Mobile should be worried about. The CEO admits that while T-Mobile’s current Un-carrier initiative has been working so far, it won’t generate enough revenue to compete with the top two carriers. He says that T-Mobile will need to invest “between $4 billion and $5 billion each year just to keep up.”

The design-focused Infobar A03 smartphone is headed for Japan

We haven’t seen a new Infobar device come from Japanese carrier KDDI since early 2013, but that’s for good reason. The carrier has just introduced their followup to their most recent Infobar handset, the A03. This Kyocera-made Android device is made of anodized aluminum and totes a 4.5-inch 1080p display, 13MP rear-facing camera, 2GB of RAM, a 2020mAh battery, 16GB of internal storage with microSD expansion up to 128GB and a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 processor. It’s also comes with IPX5/8 waterproof and IP5X dustproof resistance, and it’s available in four different colors: Nishikigoi (Red), Pool (Blue), Mocha Brown (Brown), and Sakura Iro (Pink).

The device is running Android 4.4 KitKat, but you likely won’t be able to tell. One of the aspects Infobar devices are known for is their software overlay, and the A03 is no exception. It’s running “iida UI”, which was debuted back on the first Infobar smartphone, the A01. The skin is designed by Yugo Nakamura, an award-winning artist and designer, and looks like a hybrid of Android and Windows Phone software.

The A03 is absolutely a handset made with design in mind. The company didn’t stop there, though. Maria Dahlgren, a stationary and graphic designer, and Akira Minagawa have made a line of stylish cases for the device. The company even had furniture-maker Maruni make a wooden dock for the phone, which looks like it would be perfect for a bedside table. If you’re looking for a design-focused handset with a ton of premium accessories, this may be worth looking in to.

The Infobar A03 will be available sometime in mid-February, though we’re unsure of the exact date. The price and compatible regions haven’t been made public either, but we’ll let you know if we hear anything else on the handset. Anyone out there interested in the Inforbar A03?

ZTE’s profitability went through the roof in 2014

Chinese telecom hardware company ZTE has had a banner year, according to a press release the company has issued prior to the release of its 2014 yearly report. While revenues have reportedly experienced only modest growth over 2014 (up just eight percent compared to the previous year) net profits year-on-year have grown 94.2 percent, from RMB 1.35 billion (US$217 million) in 2013 to RMB 2.64 billion (US$424 million) in 2014.

ZTE’s profit growth over the past year is due to the fast growth in China’s 4G sector; ZTE has a hand in both TD-LTE and FDD-LTE hardware, so 4G growth has benefited the company. ZTE’s global 3G and 4G business, including hardware and handset sales, was also a contributor.

unlocked ASUS PadFone X with tablet dock on sale for only $200

The ASUS PadFone X is certainly one of the more unique smartphones on the market today, and it’s currently on sale for a really low price. Ebay is selling a brand new unlocked PadFone X with the tablet dock included for only $199.99. That’s right, you can get a decent smartphone and a tablet for under $200. The devices are AT&T unlocked units, so you’ll be able to activate them on either AT&T or T-Mobile. These devices launched at over $500 unlocked, so this is a really great deal.

Just because this smartphone was announced a little over 6 months ago, doesn’t mean it’s a slouch in any way. The smartphone has a 5-inch 1080p display, a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 2300mAh battery, 16GB of on-board storage (with microSD expansion), a 13MP rear-facing camera and a 2MP front-facing camera. The tablet comes in with a 9-inch 1920 x 1200 display, a 4990mAh battery and a front-facing camera. Part of the draw to these devices is that you get two for the price of one. If you need to use a bigger display for some reason, simply dock the phone inside the tablet, and all of your information will be there instantly. This is a really handy concept and is perfect for folks who don’t want to break the bank.

Head to the link below to grab your own PadFone X. Anyone taking advantage of this deal? Let us know if you end up picking one up!

Wood back covers for Xiaomi Mi 4 now available

When Xiaomi announced the Mi 4 last summer, the Chinese smartphone maker also unveiled a handful of replacement back covers for it made out of wood. And now these have finally become available to purchase, at least in China.
If you're there, own a Mi 4, and would like to change things up, you can buy one of six wood back cover models for CNY 69 - that's just $11 or €9 at the current exchange rates, by the way.

With this move, Xiaomi follows in the footsteps of Motorola and OnePlus. The former was probably the first company to introduce wooden back covers for a smartphone recently, while OnePlus has tried to do something similar with bamboo backs for the One, but eventually had to give up.
Despite the incredibly long delay, Xiaomi hasn't given up and now offers you an interesting way to quickly customize your Mi 4. The six wood back cover models are being sold through the company's official store in China.
There's no word yet on whether they'll be sold elsewhere too, but with the Mi 4 launching in India soon we assume there will be demand for them over there as well. And if Xiaomi doesn't take these accessories outside of China, then unofficial resellers surely will.

LG H810 with QHD screen leaks

The world is waiting for LG's art piece of a smartphone, the curved G Flex2, to start shipping, but that obviously doesn't mean folks at the company are sitting on their hands. Expectedly, the Korean electronics giant is working on the successor to the LG G3, and a User Agent Profile may have shown us just that it's model name will be.

The unknown smartphone with internal model number LG H810 is supposedly the highly-anticipated LG G4, albeit in a carrier-specific AT&T version. Other than the QHD (1440x2560 pixels) display, not much else is revealed, but we wouldn't have suspected a downgrade in resolution anyway.
Judging by previous batches of leaks, the LG G4 will reduce the screen size to 5.3 inches, leaving the G Flex2 some breathing space at 5.5". Snapdragon 810 with 4GB of RAM are the ubiquitous flagship innards of the year and the G4 won't stray from the pack.
16MP main camera was all but confirmed, and a stylus will presumably accompany the new smartphone, finally putting Samsung's monopoly in the field to end.

Meizu m1 mini to be unveiled on January 28

In line with this months announcements from Oppo and Xiaomi, their compatriot Meizu is holding a press conference on January 28, titled "Connected". The event was made public on the company's official Weibo page. While we can only guess what stands behind that headline, information has surfaced, hinting that a new m1 mini will be the centerpiece of the show.

The smartphone is said to be built around a 5-inch screen and will be powered by a Mediatek chipset, but little else is known. The m1 mini will take on the likes of Xiaomi Hongmi 2, primarily in its home market, with an asking price of around $100.
The 5.5-inch Meizu m1 note was announced last month and looked much like a scaled up iPhone 5c. Its obviously smaller brother, the m1 mini will be even harder to tell apart from Apple's colorful previous generation.
Via
