Huawei Honor Holly gets priced in the UK, launches on March 6

After India, the Huawei Honor Holly is now ready to become available for sale in the UK too. It will be in stock at Amazon starting on March 6, and it's been priced at just £74.99.
The story behind that price is rather interesting, though. Huawei had a starting price of £109.99 in mind, but told people that it would lower that if they shared information about the handset on social media. The more shares, the lower the price. This campaign has now ended with the aforementioned level reached.

That's quite an innovative way of getting prospective customers involved in the pricing of a device, yet it has to be said that Huawei would have sold a much lower number of Honor Holly units had it stuck with its initial price level.
The phone comes with a 5-inch 720p touchscreen, an 8MP rear camera with LED flash, a 2MP secondary unit, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable built-in storage, and a 2,000 mAh battery. It's powered by the MediaTek MT6582 chipset, which sports a 1.3 GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU and a Mali-400MP2 GPU.
The Honor Holly runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat with Huawei's Emotion UI 2.3 on top. The main missing bit here is 4G LTE support, though dual-SIM functionality is baked in.

Xiaomi Mi 4 goes head-to-head with OnePlus One

Today is a red letter day in India for Chinese smartphone-makers: Xiaomi has flash sales for both 16GB and 64GB variants of its flagship killer Mi 4 at 5pm India time. And OnePlushas a 24-hours open sale, where you don’t need an invite to buy 16 GB and 64 GB variants of OnePlus One, temptingly priced lesser than their Mi 4 counterparts.

Mi 4 16GB is priced at INR 19,999 (US$321), while the OnePlus One 16GB, launched yesterday in India, costs INR 18,999 (US$305). Mi 4 64GB is priced at INR 23,999 (US$385), while 64GB One is at INR 21,999 (US$353).

It’s for the first time today in India that Xiaomi is selling its 64GB version of Mi4; earlier it only had a 16GB Mi4 in India. For OnePlus, it’s the opposite. It had launched its 64GB One in December, and now the Silk White OnePlus One has a 16GB version.

The fight between the Chinese phone-makers is also a proxy battle between the two leading ecommerce sites in India: Mi 4 is sold on Flipkart and One on Amazon.

Both the phone-makers have also got tangled in legal disputes with rivals in India.

Xiaomi faced a ban on sales in India after Ericsson took it to court two months ago for alleged patent infringements. The court later allowed Qualcomm-powered devices to be sold, while the injunction still stands for devices with MediaTek chipsets. Xiaomi is currently trying to avoid further trouble as “unauthorized retailers” continue to sell its banned devices.

OnePlus One too ran into a legal tangle soon after arriving in India in December. Its Indian rival Micromax had sealed a deal just two months earlier to be the exclusive partner in India for Cyanogen, whose Android-based operating system powered both the OnePlus One and the Micromax YU. After initially facing a ban, this Chinese phonemaker too was allowed to resume sales. OnePlus has developed its own Android Lollipop fork called OxygenOS, which is expected to be out in March.

Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus, tweeted to a OnePlus fan today: “We released an L alpha a while ago, but a more stable build (OxygenOS & CM12S) will need to wait until March. Sorry for delay!”

So, while the latest OnePlus One launched in India still uses CyanogenMod OS 11, the update will be OnePlus’ own version.

OnePlus says that having its own Android build will have several advantages. Carl Pei writes in a blog post:

By doing so, we can offer better localization and faster updates. We can directly implement user feedback and make it easy for the OnePlus community to shape our ROM and create the OS that they want to use. Integration between hardware, software, and the cloud will become more seamless and unified for everyone using a OnePlus device. By creating our own software, we’re better able to work directly with our users to improve our OS.

Meanwhile, the Mi4 going on sale in India today uses Xiaomi’s newest MIUI 6 version built on Android 4.4. Xiaomi is integrating MIUI 6 with Android Lollipop, and its Android 5.0-based OS is expected arrive in the second quarter of the year.

Both Mi 4 and Silk White One are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and feature a 13 megapixel rear camera. While Mi 4 has a 3080 mAh battery, Silk White One has a 3100 mAh battery. Neither device has a microSD card slot for storage expansion.

The OnePlus One is larger than the Xiaomi Mi 4, at 152.9×75.9mm compared to 139.2×68.5mm. The Silk White OnePlus One has a soft and smooth textured back cover, which the company claims was “made possible from extracting the best resources out of materials as unique as cashew nuts.” Mi 4, meanwhile, is shiny and has a slippery rear. But it feels like quality plastic as there’s not an atom of flex or shifting.

Both Xiaomi and OnePlus are new-gen phone-makers from China who have captured the imagination of India’s smartphone-hungry, tech-savvy youngsters. With everything else being almost the same, it is the cool factor that may count the most.

Samsung seems to be doing a unified push for the Galaxy S6 campaign

Samsung seems to be doing a unified push for the Galaxy S6 campaign, the "Six Appeal." First, a shadowy image of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge appeared from T-Mobile, glowing in the carrier's trademark magenta color. Now AT&T has joined with an almost identical image with a blue hue.

This image has "Spring 2015" written on the bottom, unlike the T-Mobile picture, which had nothing. Earlier we saw cases for the new flagship that will ship on March 15 and Spring begins on March 21 this year, so this may not be far off. Still, AT&T could launch the Galaxy S6 Edge at any time over the next three months.
While the launch date is still not certain, the Samsung team is probably already packing their bags for Barcelona where they will unveil the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge (perhaps other stuff too) on March 1.

L.A. School District Superintendent Drops Out the Plan to Give an iPad Tablet to Each Student

A few days ago, Ramon C. Cortines, the current LA Unified School Superintendent, decided to end the a program in which all students, teachers and administrators in the city were going to receive an Apple iPad tablet. This program would have cost the city almost $1.2 billion.
iPad using students
However, it seems that Ramon come out with another solution that implies providing computers to students who need them for instructions and testing. According to the actual Superintendent, the whole idea was never thought through properly by the former John Deasay, as the district could never afford the cost of giving every student a tablet.
We get to know that back in September 2013, students at 47 schools received iPads as a early test, and they weren’t supposed to be able to use their tablets to surf the web. Yet, at the time some students discovered a way to hack their iPads and browse the internet. It remains to see if in the near future such a program will be put on the table again or not.

German iPad Magician Turns Items on Display Into Real Items

Leave it to the Ellen Show to debut a German magician who can take objects from the iPad  screen and turn them into reality. It’s obvious a series of tricks and illusions, but they’re brilliantly done, as you can see below.
ipad magician
He takes the image on the screen and makes it into a Polaroid-like picture and manages to do the same thing in reverse. He even calls a friend via FaceTime and took the red straw he was holding all the way cross the Ocean. At some point the magician even poured milk via FaceTime, unbelievable as that may be. While some tricks may seem like they’re instantly easy to explain, others are mind blowing.
The magician, Simon Pierro goes into the audience at some point, takes a selfie with the “magic iPad” together with fans and places it into an old school photo frame. That was a pretty crazy series of tricks and I find it very hard to explain the last one, at least. Can you? Nice promotion for the iPad…

Google and Mattel bring View-Master into 21st Century with VR update

The satisfying clunk-click of a View-Master is a nostalgic staple of yesteryear. View-Master fans can rejoice, however, as Google and Mattel have teamed up to bring back View-Master in the guise of a new Android VR headset.
The modernised version debuted at the New York Toy Fair.
It provides 360-degree panoramic views of “photospheres”, which are displayed on the device that takes its image delivery system from the Google Cardboard idea.
Android phones are inserted into the solid plastic View-Master shell and an app takes care of business.
The old-fashioned picture reels are back too, but these instead pair with the headset and deliver augmented reality features, as well as classic View-Master galleries and 360-degree tours of the reel’s destinations.
A starter set is $30, which is a more than acceptable price for a novelty retro throwback.
They’ll be out in the fall and you’ll probably get one for Christmas if they find their way into department stores.

Apple doubles app size to allow for bigger and better iOS games

However much memory our phones have, we’ve all faced the not enough memory notification and had to decide whether to delete the games that take up the most space (Infinity Blade, I’m looking at you).
That dilemma’s doubled in size now as Apple has increased the app size limit from 2GB to 4GB.
This is another reason to go big when it comes to memory and smartphone collections. A little more money on the original outlay will mean fewer infuriating memory message and a better resale value down the line.
Keep an eye out for the first 4GB app.
