EU Apple users get iTunes 14-day refund policy

Altruism or law, either way there’s good news for app purchases in the European Union – a 14-day returns policy will come into play for apps.
While the returns policy is a little convoluted, it’s still in place and should hopefully make digital purchases more in line with the high street.
Gift card purchases aren’t covered but for everything else, online just got a little fairer.

Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 arrive in the US in unlocked form

While Samsung hasn't officially launched the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 in the US through any carriers, the two metal smartphones are now available to buy stateside. That's possible because they're being offered by Expansys, a third party retailer specializing in selling unlocked (SIM-free) units.
So you won't be signing any long-term agreements with carriers to get them, but on the flip side you will be paying more for the handsets than you may be used to.

Because these are unlocked devices, they're priced accordingly. So the Galaxy A3 will set you back $329.99, whereas the Galaxy A5 is going for $409.99. In both cases, you're getting dual-SIM functionality baked in, though as always only one of those slots supports high speed data connectivity.
Both phones have 4G LTE, but before you buy make sure to check if your favorite carrier's bands are supported. Information about which bands each smartphone supports is available in their respective listings.
It's still unclear whether we'll ever see the Galaxy A3 and A5 released by any US carriers, so if you must have one as soon as possible then this is pretty much your only option right now.

Oppo R5 will be up for pre-order in India on January 1

The Oppo R5 held the title of "world's thinnest smartphone" for what has to be the smallest amount of time ever. It was announced at the end of October, but by early December the Vivo X5 Max had already overtaken it in this insane race.
Still, the thickness difference between the two is barely noticeable, so this doesn't mean that the R5 has suddenly become fat. No, it's the same slender slab it's always been.

And now we know when pre-orders for it will start in India. If you want to be among the first people in the subcontinent to own an Oppo R5, then get ready to pre-order one starting on January 1 - that's in just a couple of days.
The amount of cash you'll need to shell out for this privilege is INR 29,990. At the current exchange rates that translates into $473 or €389. Considering the upper-midrange specs inside the Oppo R5, that price seems reasonable. Naturally though, this phone's unique selling point will be how slim it is - even if it's not the world's slimmest anymore.
An actual release date for the R5 in India has not been revealed by the Chinese company, at least not yet.
The Oppo R5 has a 5.2-inch 1080p touchscreen, a 13 MP rear camera, a 5 MP front camera, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a 2,000 mAh battery. It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset with an octa-core CPU, and it runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

OnePlus teases announcement taking place tomorrow

OnePlus has been in the news a lot today. There was that purported OnePlus One Mini leak, and then the partnership with MaxxAudio for the One. But it now looks like the company is set to announce something new as soon as tomorrow.
OnePlus posted the image you can see below on its official Google+ account today. So clearly something is coming, but what? You might think it will be the OnePlus One Mini, since it just leaked today, but that device could have been nothing more than a Chinese knockoff.
If it's not going to be a new phone, then surely OnePlus will start selling another accessory. And this is where those four blue dots come into the picture. They look incredibly similar to the LEDs that many external battery packs use to signal the amount of charge they're currently holding.
Four out of four LEDs would mean a full charge, in this case. And then there's the text accompanying the image: "Need a reason to be excited for tomorrow? We've got 10,000". This may want to playfully imply that we're going to see a OnePlus-branded 10,000 mAh external battery pack getting official tomorrow.
Xiaomi has a 10,400 mAh external battery pack on the market already, so this wouldn't be a stretch in terms of capacity for such an accessory. Of course, we might be way off here and this could be something else entirely. Either way, we'll find out to

T-Mobile's Data Stash will let you rollover your unused data

T-Mobile is continuing on with its "un-carrier" campaign, today unveiling the eighth installment in the saga. This time, the company has targeted an "appalling industry practice" which it plans to end.
Namely, we're talking about the fact that you can only use the amount of data your plan comes with for one month, after which any unused amount is simply gone forever.
With T-Mobile's new Data Stash feature, that won't be the case anymore. At least if you're on an eligible postpaid Simple Choice plan from T-Mobile and you buy extra high-speed data for your smartphone or tablet (3GB or more for the former, 1GB or more for the latter). And that is the main caveat here, that the new policy will only apply to people who are in this situation.
Data Stash will become available in January, and T-Mobile is going to put 10GB of 4G LTE data in every Stash, for free, as a welcome gift of sorts. The 10GB of free data will be offered for every line in the family on a qualifying plan. There's no limit to how much data you can collect in your Data Stash.
T-Mobile boasts that this is the first such program from a national carrier. Hopefully its competitors will follow suit, as they have already replicated some of its past moves.

Nokia Lumia 635 headed to Sprint, Boost, and Virgin Mobile

Today Sprint has announced that it will soon start selling the Nokia Lumia 635. The device will make it to Sprint as well as both its prepaid brands, Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile.
In fact, those two will get it first. The Lumia 635 will become available online at Boost and Virgin on December 23. Boost will sell it in cyan (pictured to the left), while Virgin will have the white model. In both cases, the price will be $99.99, excluding taxes. Though these being prepaid carriers, you won't need to sign any long-term contracts to get the phone.
Starting on January 9, the Lumia 635 will also be up for grabs in at Boost Mobile's stores, as well as select independent wireless dealers.
And on January 16 the smartphone will be offered to Sprint's postpaid customers too, but pricing hasn't been announced yet. However, we should expect it to be cheap, if we go by its prepaid price.
The Lumia 635 is the first Windows Phone 8.1 device to launch on Sprint, and the first Lumia-branded handset to be offered to the company's prepaid customers.
It comes with a 4.5-inch 854x480 touchscreen, a 5 MP rear camera, no front-facing snapper, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC with a 1.2 GHz quad-core CPU, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, microSD card support, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 1,830 mAh battery.

Huawei Honor 6 Plus, also known as Huawei Glory 6 Plus, has been officially launched in China

Huawei Honor 6 Plus, also known as Huawei Glory 6 Plus, has been officially launched in China. It leaked a few times already and its highlight is a dual 8MP rear camera setup, somewhat similar to the HTC One (M8) Duo setup.
Huawei Honor 6 Plus packs a 5.5" IPS display of 1080p resolution and runs on the company's proprietary Kirin 925 chipset. The latter offers a snappy octa-core processor with four Cortex-A15 and four Cortex-A7 cores, Mali T628 MP4 GPU and 3GB of RAM. The Kirin 925 chip also offers 4G LTE Cat.6 connectivity at 300Mbps downlink and 32GB expandable storage.
The metal frame around the unibody is also a nice touch.

Huawei Honor 6 Plus
As we already mentioned, the Huawei Honor 6 Plus is quite interesting with its two 8MP camera sensors at the back. The clever setup and its additional SLR-grade ISP technology and software algorithms allow you to take 13MP shots, captures twice the light a single sensor will do, and helps achieving super-fast autofocus at just 0.1s.
Finally, Huawei Honor 6 Plus is powered by a big enough 3,600 mAh battery and runs on the Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Emotion 3.0 UI.
Huawei Honor 6 Plus is offered in two flavors in China - a dual-SIM model with 4G connectivity possible only on one SIM, which is priced at CNY 1,999 (€258), and another dual-SIM version where both slots support 4G LTE (though probably not at the same time), which will cost CNY 2,499 (€322).
The pre-order campaign kicks off tomorrow, while shipping will begin in a week. There is no word on the worldwide availability just yet.

Let a stranger wake you from your slumber with Wakie app

How does waking up every morning with a different guy or gal sound to you?
New free iOS, Android and Windows phone app Wakie lets that happen safely and easily, replacing your alarm clock with a call from a willing participant somewhere in the world.
Relying on the kindness of strangers is a novel way to wake but it’s an interesting enough prospect to at least try.
The app only allows up to a minute of chat, so things won’t get awkward, but there’s also a message board so if you take a shine to your stranger you can reach out publicly on there. Whatever it takes to shake you from your slumber.
Reckon you’ll use it? It’s interesting enough to try, we reckon, so we’re going to give it a go and report back on the MP4Nation forum. Try it yourself and let us know how you got on.

Indonesia sees uptake in litigation over online harrassment: report

One of Indonesia’s most problematic internet laws is known as the ITE law. Enacted in 2008, the law lets citizens sue anyone who offends them online. Recently, Southeast Asia’s Freedom of Expression (SafeNet Voice), an organization which promotes freedom of speech, published a report which shows a worrying trend regarding the controversial law.

So far, out of 78 cases filed under the regulation since 2008, 41 of them happened in 2014 alone. An uptake in cases emerged in 2013, during which 27 cases were filed. Before that, there were less than 10 cases filed each year. If this trend continues, we’ll likely see even more people making charges under the ITE law in the coming years.

When it comes to the platforms these alleged acts of defamation take place on, Facebook and Twitter top the charts – accounting for 49 percent and 21 percent of all cases respectively. However, more private platforms such as Path, BBM, and SMS have also been convicted under the internet law.

When it comes to the clauses used when charging someone for online harassment, 92 percent fall under defamation – whether the online or offline clause, with another 5 percent cases are filed for insulting religion. As for the professions of those who sue, 37 percent of them are public officials, and 14 percent work in high-income positions in fields like medicine or law.

Out of all the 78 cases filed so far, 71 percent made it to courts. 13 percent of cases resulted in convictions, with the offender subject to less than a year in prison.

See: How Indonesia’s problematic internet law will impede freedom of expression

There are numerous factors which make the ITE law controversial. For example, the law does not have a strong definition of what might provide grounds for making someone feel “offended.” Law enforcers also arguably don’t have experience handling these types of cases. Some might also feel that SSMS should not be subject to the law.

ICT minister Rudiantara, who spoke at Startup Asia Jakarta 2014 recently, said that he plans to address this problem in one of three ways: reducing sentences for the convicted, appointing specialized law enforcers who have deeper understanding of these cases, or educating Indonesia’s law enforcers on how to better evaluate these cases.

WeChat and EasyTaxi team up for taxi bookings in Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines

Nearly five months after the initial tie-up in Singapore, today WeChat and EasyTaxi announced that its partnership is rolling out to Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Starting today, WeChat users in those three countries can flag a taxi inside the messaging app.

People can do this by adding EasyTaxi’s official WeChat account inside the chat app (Malaysia: easytaximy; Thailand: EasyTaxiThailand; the Philippines: EasyTaxi_PH).

The Singapore pilot program seemed to be popular, with 5,000 cab rides on EasyTaxi booked through WeChat in the first two weeks.

EasyTaxi and WeChat are running various promotional discounts in the three new countries to entice people to grab a cab in this new way.

There’s still no online booking system within WeChat for users outside of mainland China, so these cab rides will have to be paid for using EasyTaxi’s system.

WeChat, which has 468 million monthly active users, expanded into mobile commerce and online payments in China earlier this year, but all those advanced features are not available to overseas users of Tencent’s messaging app.

LY fires back at Tuniu: ‘In one year, we will completely surpass you’

The fight is on! Yesterday, we wrote about how Chinese travel site Tuniu has taken aim at rival travel site LY.com, demanding that its travel agency partners give Tuniu lower prices or stop working with LY altogether. According to Techweb, LY.com does not plan to take things lying down, and the company’s CEO has sent an internal memo issuing a challenge to Tuniu (our translation):

In view of Tuniu’s arrogance and monopolistic practices in its international travel services, I [LY CEO Liu Qing] represent [LY.com] and all its partners in issuing Tuniu a challenge: LY.com will take twelve months to completely surpass you professionally. We will serve more than one million people in 2015, all while spending less than Tuniu [in the process].

Clearly, things are heating up in China’s online travel industry. A price war may prove bad for both companies, but it could be good for Chinese consumers, who are increasingly interested in traveling abroad. Lower travel prices in China’s online market could even end up being a boon for popular tourist destinations like Korea and Japan, as more Chinese tourists means more money: Chinese tourists spend more per capita than tourists from any other country.
